The leaves of the South American evergreen mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) have traditionally been used as a natural medicine for many purposes, ranging from appetite control to physical and mental stimulation. The herb is an important component of many popular drinks, most commonly referred to as Paraguay Tea. Traditionally, the drink is held in a gourd and sipped with a metal straw and sharing the drink can be a sign of friendship and bonding. In recent years we have seen a resurgence of this ingredient across a multitude of functional beverages, notably teas and energy drinks.
