An in vitro study showed that Portusana® induced the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) from intracellular storage compartments to the plasma membrane in an insulin-like manner.
A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study provided in vivo evidence for positive effects of the ingredient on blood sugar levels. Sixty-three patients with type 2 diabetes received 180 mg purslane herb extract or placebo daily for 12 weeks. After six weeks, HbA1c levels in blood had improved in almost 80% of patients. After 12 weeks, the responder subgroup analysis revealed that HbA1c declined significantly more in the purslane extract group than the placebo group.
