Rich in valuable nutrients, the fleshy leaves of the purslane herb are appreciated as a culinary
ingredient worldwide.
Purslane also has a long tradition of medicinal use. In Near Eastern folk remedies, the plant is
treasured for its properties to positively affect blood glucose metabolism.
Purslane has been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments such as headaches and stomach pain
or urinary discomfort in different parts of the world.
Portusana® helps to regulate glucose metabolism through three mechanisms: reduction of intestinal
glucose absorption, increased insulin sensitivity, and increased glucose uptake. Furthermore, stable and healthy blood glucose levels help to manage appetite by inducing satiety.
An in-vitro study showed that Portusana® induced the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) from intracellular storage compartments to the plasma membrane in an insulin-like manner1.
A randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled clinical study was designed to determine the efficacy of Purslane herb extract (PE) in achieving glucose control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus2. A dose of 180 mg/day of PE for a period of 3 months significantly reduced HbA1c levels from baseline in those patients responding to treatment. HbA1c levels declined significantly more in the PE group than in the placebo group in the subgroup of responders. Systolic blood pressure decreased significantly more in the PE group than in the placebo group as well.
